Balloon Fiesta

We’ve been talking about heading to Albuquerque for the balloon fiesta (I always thought it was a festival…it’s not, it’s a FIESTA). Anyway, we finally decided to make it happen this year. David was supposed to take a half day Thursday, we would drive up that night and have all day Friday and Saturday to go to the fiesta, and visit with family and friends. It ended up that David had to work all day at the last minute, so we didn’t leave until bright and early Friday morning.

Clark (David’s brother) & Liz were so gracious to let us crash with their family for a couple of days. We all went to the Glowdeo Friday evening, where they light up the balloons in unison. We knew traffic would be bad getting in, but it was much worse than we expected. By the time we got there, many of the balloons had run out of gas and they were packing up. There were SO many people everywhere. It was hard to keep track of each other, especially when pushing a stroller because you are constantly getting cut off and you can’t squeeze in between people. The fireworks show at the end of the night was best. Shayla was mesmerized.

We woke up SUPER early the next morning (as if we weren’t already tired from waking up early the day before). We did our best to keep Shayla asleep as long as possible. We waited in a line of cars to get into the parking lot, and then we had to wait in a long line to get our tickets.

The funny part was that even though there were people in line behind us, once we finally got our tickets, the line was gone. Nobody left. Hmm…

The balloons don’t really go up all at once, nor do they really go in waves. They kind of just go up whenever they are ready. They’re all just laid out on the ground and you just walk around and watch them all.

There were a lot of fun shapes. David’s favorite was Darth Vader.2010 10-9 Darth Vader family pic

The crowd control police on horses were there, so we took Shayla up for a little one-on-one with some horses. She didn’t really care too much. She was much more interested in watching everything else go on around her.

We were so tired, we were asleep by 9:30 when we got home Sunday night. At 2:30 in the morning we were awakened by police helicopters saying something about “We will find you.” This went on for probably about an hour. It finally woke Shayla up about half an hour into it. She fell asleep in bed with us. At 4 or so, I put her back in bed, and she immediately woke up and screamed for 30-45 minutes. I gave up and brought her back in bed with us where she cuddled up to me and whimpered for the next several minutes before falling back asleep. She has never woken up in the middle of the night, nor has she ever slept in bed with us. That meant that I didn’t sleep very well, fearing we would roll over onto her or something. It was about the worst night of sleep ever.
