Shayla got two birthday celebrations this year: one with the Merrill family the day before, and then our own little family celebration on her actual birthday. I split up her presents, so she had some to open on both days. Other than that, we kept it pretty low-key. We let her blow out candles both days…she doesn’t totally have the hang of it yet, though she did eventually blow it out. She would either try to suck in, or would basically just breathe on it. I never even made her a real birthday cake. David and I have really been trying to limit the desserts in our house (which has only sort of worked), so I didn’t want to have a whole cake sitting around. She just blew out a candle on the Carmelitas we needed to finish up. My mom made our favorite ice cream cake for the family celebration. Shayla enjoyed having a birthday, and definitely loves getting new toys. When you ask her how old she is, she has finally figured out that the answer is “2” now, but she still struggles to get that second finger up. She kind of uses her other hand to try to get it up.
Opening presents Day 1: She is very meticulous about each piece of wrapping paper stuck to the present.
The loot: Fisher-Price Train, an activity book, Elefun, some more food for her kitchen, and a new baby doll
Playing Elefun with Charlotte and uncles
Time to blow out the candle. Hmm…what is that flame?
Ready to open gifts on her actual birthday
Few things make this little girl happier than books.
Blowing out the Carmelita candle (doesn’t matter to her what the candle is on, as long as it’s dessert…right?)
A couple days after her birthday, Marissa, who was our doula came by to visit and brought a little gift for Easton. Shayla eyed the bag for a long time, and finally started to open it. After she was all done with that (clothes for Easton don’t excite her much), she looks at both of us and says “More presents?” Ha. If only.
